The Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children is an ACGME-accredited three-year postgraduate training program that prepares physicians to become expert pediatric intensivists — clinicians skilled in the care of critically ill and injured children. Fellows receive diverse clinical exposure to multiple critical care environments including the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU), Pediatric Burn Unit, and specialized rapid response teams. The curriculum integrates structured clinical rotations, multidisciplinary team collaboration, advanced supportive care including ECMO, and opportunities in sedation, transport medicine, and subspecialty electives. Research and scholarly activity are significant components, with approximately nine months of protected research time to develop expertise in evidence-based medicine, quality improvement, and scientific inquiry. Fellows also participate in high-level educational activities — including journal clubs, morbidity and mortality conferences, weekly case conferences, and statistical/research design instruction — and provide supervised teaching to pediatric residents and medical students. Through experiential learning and faculty mentorship, graduates are prepared to practice independently, contribute to academic pediatrics, and lead in clinical and research domains of pediatric critical care.
