Fellowship in Nephrology

1. Must have completed an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program
2. Must hold an MD or equivalent medical degree
3. Must be eligible for Internal Medicine board certification
4. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must have a valid ECFMG certificate and fulfill U.S. fellowship training requirements
5. Must meet medical licensure eligibility requirements for New York State or applicable licensing authority
6. Applicants must submit a complete application including letters of recommendation and USMLE scores for consideration

The Fellowship in Nephrology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, Brooklyn is a two-year ACGME-accredited advanced training program designed to provide comprehensive clinical and academic training in the diagnosis and management of kidney diseases. The fellowship provides extensive exposure to acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease, dialysis therapies, kidney transplantation, hypertension, electrolyte disorders, acid-base disorders, renal pathology, and critical care nephrology. Fellows receive hands-on experience through rotations at University Hospital at Downstate, Kings County Hospital Center, and Brooklyn VA Hospital, with training in inpatient consultations, outpatient nephrology clinics, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy, kidney biopsies, transplant nephrology, and interventional nephrology. The program also emphasizes clinical research, teaching skills, and evidence-based practice, preparing fellows for independent nephrology practice, board certification, and academic careers.
