Fellowship in Nephrology

• Must have completed a U.S. residency in Internal Medicine from an ACGME-accredited program
• Must be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Internal Medicine
• Must provide proof of medical school graduation (original diploma)
• Must have successfully passed all three steps of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE)
• Must obtain a California medical license before starting the fellowship
• Applicants must have U.S. citizenship, permanent residency status, or a valid J-1 visa
• International Medical Graduates (IMGs) with permanent residency or J-1 visa status must provide a valid ECFMG certification
• Applicants rotating through VA medical centers must meet Selective Service registration requirements (where applicable)

The Nephrology Fellowship at UC Irvine School of Medicine (officially Nephrology, Hypertension and Kidney Transplantation Fellowship) is a two-year ACGME-accredited clinical fellowship program that provides advanced training in the diagnosis and management of a wide spectrum of kidney-related disorders. The program offers comprehensive clinical exposure in acute and chronic kidney disease, hypertension, glomerular diseases, kidney transplantation, dialysis, electrolyte and acid-base disorders, and other renal conditions. Fellows gain hands-on experience through inpatient consultations, outpatient clinics, dialysis services, and kidney transplant care at UC Irvine Medical Center, VA Long Beach Healthcare System, and affiliated dialysis centers. The fellowship also includes structured educational activities such as lectures, grand rounds, seminars, journal clubs, and dedicated research opportunities to prepare fellows for careers in clinical practice or academic nephrology.

1. Applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)
2. Application cycle begins in early July each year
3. Applicants must register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)
4. Submit required application documents through ERAS, including:

• Curriculum Vitae (CV)
• Personal Statement
• Letters of Recommendation
• USMLE score reports
• Medical school diploma/transcripts
• ECFMG certification (for IMGs)

1. Applications are reviewed from mid-July through the end of October
2. Selected candidates are invited for fellowship interviews (typically conducted between August and October)
3. Final selection is completed through the NRMP Match process
