Overview

  • The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is a highly selective ACGME-accredited advanced cardiology fellowship designed to train future leaders in invasive and interventional cardiovascular medicine. The program accepts three fellows annually from a highly competitive applicant pool and provides intensive training in modern catheter-based cardiovascular therapies.
  • Fellows train across multiple major institutions including Tisch Hospital, Kimmel Pavilion, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System. These facilities collectively perform more than 9,000 diagnostic and interventional coronary and peripheral procedures annually, providing exceptional procedural volume and clinical exposure.
  • The fellowship emphasizes comprehensive training in coronary artery disease management and percutaneous coronary intervention. Fellows gain experience treating acute coronary syndromes, complex coronary lesions, chronic total occlusions, left main coronary disease, bifurcation lesions, calcified vessels, and high-risk interventional procedures. Training focuses on both technical skills and evidence-based patient care.
  • A major strength of the program is exposure to advanced imaging and physiologic assessment techniques. Fellows become proficient in intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), optical coherence tomography (OCT), fractional flow reserve (FFR), coronary flow reserve measurements, and advanced hemodynamic evaluation. These technologies are integrated into daily clinical practice and procedural decision-making.
  • Training also includes extensive exposure to peripheral arterial interventions and structural heart procedures. Fellows participate in peripheral vascular interventions, device-based valve therapies, atrial septal defect closure, patent foramen ovale closure, balloon valvuloplasty, and specialized structural heart interventions. A dedicated structural heart rotation is incorporated into the curriculum.
  • The cardiac catheterization laboratories provide hands-on procedural training under the supervision of nationally recognized interventional cardiologists. Fellows progressively assume greater responsibility as their technical skills develop and receive direct feedback from experienced faculty members. The program emphasizes procedural competency, patient safety, and clinical judgment.
  • Research is an important component of fellowship training. Fellows participate in clinical trials, outcomes research, device investigations, coronary intervention studies, and translational cardiovascular research. Faculty mentorship supports scholarly productivity, national conference presentations, and publication development.
  • Educational activities include interventional core curriculum conferences, catheterization laboratory case reviews, morbidity and mortality conferences, journal clubs, cardiology grand rounds, research meetings, and multidisciplinary cardiovascular conferences. Graduates are well prepared for careers in academic interventional cardiology, private practice, structural heart disease training, and cardiovascular research.
