Fellowship Hospice & Palliative Medicine

The Hospice & Palliative Medicine Fellowship at UAB Heersink School of Medicine is a one-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited program providing interdisciplinary training in hospice and palliative care. Fellows gain experience in inpatient palliative care at UAB Hospital, Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Children’s of Alabama, along with outpatient clinics, telehealth, home-based palliative care, community hospices, and long-term care facilities. Training focuses on symptom management, goals-of-care discussions, communication, psychosocial and spiritual support, and care for patients and families facing serious or life-limiting illness. The program also includes weekly didactic sessions, communication workshops, research and quality improvement projects, teaching opportunities, and wellness activities to prepare fellows for practice in inpatient, outpatient, and hospice settings.

1. Apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) using Program Number 1007540F0 for the Palliative Care track or 1007540F1 for the Palliative Care Medicine/Pediatrics track.
2. Submit a current Curriculum Vitae (CV), updated within three months.
3. Submit medical school transcripts and diploma if requested.
4. Submit the Medical School Dean's Letter.
5. Submit three Letters of Recommendation, including letters from former program directors.
6. Submit certification or verification of previous residency training.
7. Provide evidence of eligibility for an Alabama medical license and Controlled Substance Certificate.
8. Provide evidence of eligibility for Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration.
9. International Medical Graduates must submit a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate.
10. Applications are reviewed beginning in July, interview invitations are released in the last week of August, and interviews are conducted from September through October.
11. The program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), with Match Day in November and fellowship commencement on July 1.
