• The Hospice & Palliative Medicine Fellowship at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is a highly respected ACGME-accredited program dedicated to training physicians in comprehensive palliative and end-of-life care. The fellowship emphasizes compassionate, patient-centered care while providing rigorous academic and clinical training.
• The program is administered through the Division of Geriatric Medicine & Palliative Care and serves as a model for interdisciplinary care delivery. Fellows work closely with physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals to address the complex needs of patients and families facing serious illnesses.
• Clinical training occurs across multiple inpatient and outpatient settings, exposing fellows to a wide range of medical conditions, healthcare systems, and patient populations. This diversity allows fellows to gain expertise in managing complex symptom burdens and difficult clinical scenarios.
• A major strength of the fellowship is its focus on communication skills. Fellows receive structured training in conducting family meetings, discussing goals of care, delivering serious news, and supporting patients through challenging healthcare decisions.
• The curriculum also emphasizes pain management, symptom control, psychosocial care, spiritual care, ethics consultation, and hospice medicine. Fellows learn evidence-based approaches to improving quality of life for patients with advanced and life-limiting illnesses.
• Educational activities include grand rounds, journal clubs, interdisciplinary conferences, ethics seminars, simulation-based learning, and case discussions. Fellows receive close mentorship from experienced faculty throughout the training year.
• Each fellow completes a quality improvement or scholarly project and is encouraged to present findings at regional and national conferences. Funding support is available for approved academic presentations.
• Graduates are prepared for careers in academic palliative care, hospice medicine, hospital-based consultation services, outpatient palliative programs, healthcare leadership, and medical education.

Step 1:
