The Combined Anatomic Pathology/Neuropathology Residency Program at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is a specialized physician training pathway designed for individuals seeking expertise in both diagnostic pathology and diseases of the nervous system. The program provides comprehensive training through Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, and affiliated neuroscience centers. Residents receive intensive instruction in surgical pathology and autopsy pathology while simultaneously developing advanced competency in neuropathology. Training includes the diagnosis of primary and metastatic brain tumors, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, epilepsy-related pathology, traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral nerve disorders, neuromuscular diseases, pediatric neurological disorders, and spinal cord pathology. Residents work closely with neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuroradiologists, neuroscientists, and rehabilitation specialists in a highly collaborative academic environment. The curriculum integrates clinical service, didactic conferences, multidisciplinary tumor boards, neuropathology slide reviews, research activities, and scholarly presentations. Strong emphasis is placed on molecular diagnostics, translational neuroscience, and emerging neuropathological technologies. Graduates are exceptionally prepared for American Board of Pathology certification, advanced fellowships, academic medicine careers, neuroscience research, and leadership positions in neuropathology and laboratory medicine.
