The Clinical Pathology Residency Program at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is a fully accredited three-year residency designed to train future leaders in laboratory medicine and diagnostic pathology. Based primarily at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, with pediatric training experiences at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, the program offers extensive exposure to the complete spectrum of clinical pathology practice. Residents rotate through hematopathology, transfusion medicine, microbiology, clinical chemistry, molecular pathology, cytogenetics, coagulation medicine, laboratory management, informatics, and pediatric clinical pathology. The curriculum combines hands-on clinical responsibility with a structured educational framework that includes daily conferences, resident-led case discussions, journal clubs, board review sessions, and an evening slide conference series. Trainees work closely with nationally recognized faculty while gaining experience in the interpretation of laboratory data, quality assurance, laboratory operations, test utilization, and emerging diagnostic technologies. The program places strong emphasis on evidence-based medicine, patient safety, research, leadership development, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Residents are encouraged to participate in scholarly projects and quality improvement initiatives throughout training. Graduates are exceptionally well prepared for American Board of Pathology certification examinations, advanced fellowship training, academic careers, and leadership positions in hospital laboratories, reference laboratories, biotechnology companies, and healthcare systems.
