The Combined Anatomic Pathology/Clinical Pathology Residency Program at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is a comprehensive four-year ACGME-accredited training program designed to prepare future leaders in diagnostic pathology and laboratory medicine. The program is based primarily at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and includes training opportunities at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and other affiliated institutions. Residents receive balanced and integrated exposure to both anatomic pathology and clinical pathology disciplines, allowing them to develop broad diagnostic expertise across surgical pathology, cytopathology, autopsy pathology, hematopathology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, transfusion medicine, molecular pathology, and laboratory management. The curriculum combines extensive hands-on clinical training with structured educational conferences, multidisciplinary case discussions, journal clubs, board review sessions, and research opportunities. Residents work alongside nationally recognized faculty while interpreting complex pathology specimens and laboratory data that directly impact patient care. The program emphasizes evidence-based diagnostics, quality improvement, patient safety, healthcare innovation, laboratory leadership, and translational research. Advanced training opportunities are available in molecular diagnostics, digital pathology, informatics, and subspecialty pathology services. Graduates are exceptionally well prepared for American Board of Pathology certification examinations, competitive fellowship programs, academic medicine careers, hospital pathology practice, laboratory directorships, and leadership positions in healthcare organizations worldwide.
