Primary Care Addiction Fellowship Program

The Primary Care Addiction Fellowship Program at UCSF School of Medicine, San Francisco is an intensive 1-year clinical training program designed to prepare physicians to deliver high-quality addiction care within primary care and community health settings. The fellowship combines direct patient care, clinical teaching, and experiential learning within public healthcare systems, particularly in collaboration with the San Francisco Department of Public Health. Fellows gain hands-on experience across diverse settings such as outpatient clinics, community-based programs, residential treatment centers, and hospital consultation services, developing expertise in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of substance use disorders. The curriculum emphasizes patient-centered communication, evidence-based addiction medicine, interprofessional collaboration, and stigma-free care, especially for underserved populations. Fellows also complete a mentored scholarly project and can tailor electives to build specialized skills, preparing them for leadership roles in addiction medicine and primary care.

1. Must have completed residency training in a primary specialty (commonly Family Medicine or Internal Medicine)
2. Should be board-certified or board-eligible in the respective specialty
3. Demonstrated interest in Addiction Medicine and care of underserved populations
4. Strong commitment to primary care, community health, and substance use disorder treatment
5. Selection is based on a holistic review including academic record, leadership, service, and lived experiences
