Fellowship in Addiction Medicine

1. Must have satisfactorily completed an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited residency in one of the 24 eligible primary specialties.
2. Must be board-certified or board-eligible in the completed primary specialty.
3. Must be licensed, or eligible to obtain a license, to practice medicine in the State of Alabama before the fellowship start date.
4. Must be a United States citizen or hold a valid visa that permits graduate medical education training in the United States.
5. International medical graduates must meet the applicable Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) requirements.
6. There is no minimum United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) score requirement; scores are considered as part of the overall application review.

The Addiction Medicine Fellowship at UAB Heersink School of Medicine is a 12-month Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited program that provides interdisciplinary clinical training in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of substance use disorders. Fellows receive hands-on experience through inpatient and outpatient clinical rotations at UAB Hospital, Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center, the Opioid Reassessment Clinic, and Beacon Integrated Healthcare. Training covers substance intoxication and withdrawal, medications for opioid and alcohol use disorders, buprenorphine treatment, pain management, motivational interviewing, harm reduction, and care for vulnerable populations. The program also provides weekly didactic sessions and dedicated research opportunities covering medical and psychiatric comorbidities, special populations, pain management, and evidence-based addiction treatment.

1. Apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
2. Submit the required current photograph, curriculum vitae, personal statement, and medical school transcript.
3. Submit United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3 score reports.
4. Submit a copy of the current medical license and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration.
5. International medical graduates must provide an Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate and applicable visa documentation.
6. Eligible applicants are reviewed and selected for interviews.
7. Fellowship positions are filled through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
