About Course

The Plastic Surgery Residency Program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is one of the most prestigious and internationally recognized plastic surgery training programs in the world. The residency is offered through the Hansjörg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery, which is considered one of the largest and most academically active plastic surgery departments in the United States. The department is known for excellence in reconstructive surgery, microsurgery, craniofacial surgery, aesthetic surgery, facial transplantation research, wound healing, and surgical innovation.
The integrated six-year residency is designed to provide comprehensive training in both reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery. Residents gain extensive exposure to complex surgical procedures involving the face, breast, upper extremity, lower extremity, trunk, head and neck region, and congenital craniofacial conditions. Training emphasizes both functional reconstruction and aesthetic outcomes.
Residents train across multiple major institutions including NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, Kimmel Pavilion, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, and additional specialty surgical centers. These institutions provide access to high surgical volumes and diverse patient populations.
The curriculum provides progressive responsibility from junior to chief resident years. Early residency includes training in general surgery, trauma surgery, burn care, vascular surgery, anesthesia, dermatology, and surgical critical care. Senior years focus heavily on advanced plastic surgery, microsurgery, hand surgery, craniofacial surgery, breast reconstruction, aesthetic surgery, and complex reconstructive procedures.
A major strength of the program is its internationally recognized microsurgery and reconstructive surgery training. Residents participate in complex free tissue transfer procedures, limb salvage surgery, post-cancer reconstruction, gender-affirming surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, and facial reanimation procedures under expert faculty supervision.
The department has made major contributions to advancements in facial transplantation, craniofacial biology, distraction osteogenesis, surgical simulation, wound healing science, and regenerative medicine. Residents are encouraged to participate in clinical research, translational investigations, academic publications, and presentations at national and international plastic surgery meetings.
Educational activities include grand rounds, morbidity and mortality conferences, microsurgery laboratories, cadaver dissection courses, journal clubs, board preparation sessions, multidisciplinary tumor boards, and specialty conferences. Residents work closely with nationally recognized faculty leaders across every major plastic surgery subspecialty.
Graduates of the residency consistently pursue advanced fellowships in craniofacial surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery, aesthetic surgery, gender-affirming surgery, pediatric plastic surgery, and academic reconstructive surgery. The program prepares physicians for leadership roles in academic medicine, high-volume surgical practice, research, and innovation within plastic and reconstructive surgery.
