The Plastic Surgery Integrated Residency Program at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is an ACGME-accredited seven-year residency that combines comprehensive clinical education with a mandatory, fully funded research year. Residents receive extensive operative experience at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, and affiliated hospitals, gaining exposure to the full spectrum of reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery. The curriculum emphasizes graded autonomy, microsurgical expertise, craniofacial reconstruction, breast reconstruction, hand surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, cosmetic surgery, and complex wound management. A distinguishing feature of the program is the dedicated research year, during which residents participate in basic science, translational, and outcomes research through laboratories focused on wound healing, regenerative surgery, craniofacial biology, and plastic surgery outcomes. Residents are encouraged to publish extensively, present at national and international meetings, and participate in global health initiatives. Graduates are exceptionally well prepared for certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and for careers in academic plastic surgery, reconstructive surgery, cosmetic surgery, or advanced subspecialty fellowships.
