The Interventional Radiology Residency Program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is one of the leading image-guided therapy training programs in the United States. The residency is designed to prepare physicians for careers in advanced interventional radiology through a combination of diagnostic imaging education, procedural expertise, clinical patient management, and academic research. The program emphasizes innovation, multidisciplinary collaboration, and minimally invasive treatment strategies.
Residents train across major clinical sites including NYU Langone Health, Perlmutter Cancer Center, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare System, Tisch Hospital, Kimmel Pavilion, and affiliated specialty centers. These institutions provide exposure to a broad range of complex vascular, oncologic, hepatobiliary, trauma, and interventional procedures.
The integrated residency structure allows residents to develop strong foundations in diagnostic radiology while progressively advancing into specialized interventional radiology training. Residents gain extensive experience interpreting imaging studies, planning interventions, managing procedural complications, and providing longitudinal patient care.
Clinical training includes arterial interventions, venous interventions, peripheral vascular disease management, dialysis access procedures, embolization therapies, tumor ablation, interventional oncology procedures, image-guided biopsies, drainage procedures, portal hypertension management, hepatobiliary interventions, genitourinary interventions, and advanced catheter-based therapies. Residents also gain expertise in peri-procedural patient evaluation and outpatient clinical management.
A major strength of the program is its nationally recognized interventional oncology training. Residents participate in minimally invasive cancer treatments including radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation, cryoablation, transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), radioembolization, and image-guided tumor therapies. Training occurs in close collaboration with medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, and transplant services.
The curriculum includes dedicated education in vascular medicine, interventional techniques, radiation safety, procedural simulation, imaging interpretation, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice. Residents participate in multidisciplinary conferences, tumor boards, morbidity and mortality conferences, journal clubs, and advanced procedural workshops.
Research opportunities are available throughout residency training. Residents may participate in clinical trials, device development projects, outcomes research, interventional oncology studies, artificial intelligence applications in imaging, translational science projects, and national scientific presentations. Faculty mentorship supports academic development and scholarly productivity.
