The Surgical Pathology Fellowship at UCSF is a one-year, intensive advanced training program designed to develop expertise in diagnostic surgical pathology through structured rotations across multiple subspecialties. Fellows gain comprehensive hands-on experience in specimen grossing, microscopic interpretation, and intraoperative (frozen section) consultations, along with exposure to ancillary techniques such as immunohistochemistry and molecular diagnostics. The program emphasizes progressive responsibility, allowing fellows to move toward independent case handling while working on high-volume, complex and consultation cases referred from various institutions. In addition, fellows actively participate in teaching, tumor boards, multidisciplinary discussions, and research activities, preparing them for careers in academic pathology or specialized clinical practice.
