Overview

The SCGH Research Fellowship offers a dedicated opportunity to engage in perioperative and anaesthesia research in a tertiary hospital setting. Fellows work closely with clinical trials nurses to screen theatre lists, recruit and consent participants, and follow up with patients in the hospital and at 30 days post-surgery. They assist with governance, including preparing submissions to the Research and Governance Office, safety reporting (adverse events), and trial monitoring visits. The role also involves supporting junior doctors (RMOs, trainees) with their audits and research projects. There are opportunities for grant writing, reviewing grant applications, and contributing to academic publications. Ongoing trials at SCGH include multi-centre RCTs (e.g., platelet storage, tranexamic acid studies), as well as pilot studies like midodrine in arthroplasty and ketamine for chronic post-surgical pain. This fellowship provides exposure to clinical research infrastructure (ethics, safety, trial governance) and helps build capacity for independent research in anaesthesia.
