Overview

Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital’s Anaesthesia Department is a tertiary-level centre and serves as the principal neurosurgical anaesthesia hub in Western Australia. The Neuro-Anaesthesia Fellowship provides intensive, hands-on exposure to a wide variety of neurosurgical cases, including trauma, brain tumours, epilepsy surgery, neurovascular interventions, spinal surgery, and functional neurosurgery. Fellows also get to work in advanced settings like the intraoperative MRI suite (I-MRI) for brain surgery and the neuroradiology/interventional imaging service (NIISWA). There is a structured academic component: fellows are expected to complete at least one clinical audit, attend the neuro-anaesthesia journal club, and contribute to departmental teaching of junior doctors. The department supports research opportunities, and fellows are mentored to design, carry out, and present research. The fellowship is highly competitive, with two Neuro Anaesthesia fellow positions per year, starting either in February or August.
