Fellowship In Pediatric Pulmonology

The Pediatric Pulmonology Fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine is a three-year program providing specialized training in the diagnosis and management of respiratory disorders in infants, children, and adolescents. Fellows receive comprehensive clinical experience in conditions such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, bronchiectasis, sleep-disordered breathing, interstitial lung disease, and chronic respiratory insufficiency. Training includes pulmonary function testing, bronchoscopy, bronchoalveolar lavage, pulmonary physiology, blood gas assessment, allergy testing, and sleep studies. The program also emphasizes research, teaching, quality improvement, and scholarly development, with protected research time during the later fellowship years.

1. Apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) during the fall application cycle.
2. Submit the ERAS Common Application Form.
3. Provide three letters of recommendation, including a letter from the Department Chair or Residency Director.
4. Submit USMLE Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3 scores, or applicable COMLEX scores.
5. Submit a personal statement.
6. Submit an updated curriculum vitae.
7. Submit the medical school transcript and other required application documents through ERAS.
8. Provide information regarding board scores and research background/publications.
9. The program faculty reviews applications and invites selected candidates for a personal interview, generally between January and April.
10. Participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Pediatric Pulmonology Fellowship Match.
