Fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Disease

The Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine provides three years of specialized training in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases in children. Fellows gain clinical experience through inpatient consultations, outpatient infectious diseases clinics, maternal-child HIV care, antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention and control, clinical microbiology, and management of infections in immunocompromised patients. The program also emphasizes research and academic development through training in clinical research, epidemiology, biostatistics, microbiology, and immunology, along with opportunities for teaching, scholarly projects, conferences, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

1. Apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
2. Submit the ERAS Common Application Form.
3. Submit a personal statement and curriculum vitae.
4. Provide the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) and medical school transcript.
5. Submit the USMLE or COMLEX transcript.
6. Provide three letters of recommendation, with at least one letter from the Department of Pediatrics Chair or Residency Director.
7. The program reviews completed applications and contacts selected applicants regarding interviews.
8. Participate in the Pediatric Subspecialties Fall Match through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
