Fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine

The Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at UCSF is a one-year, ACGME-accredited subspecialty program that trains physicians in delivering comprehensive, patient-centered care for individuals with serious and life-limiting illnesses. The program emphasizes a transdisciplinary approach, where fellows collaborate with a diverse healthcare team including physicians, nurses, social workers, and chaplains to address physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of patients and their families. Training occurs across multiple clinical settings such as academic medical centers, Veterans Affairs hospitals, safety-net hospitals, outpatient cancer centers, and hospice environments, ensuring broad exposure to both inpatient and community-based care. The curriculum focuses on pain and symptom management, communication for complex and end-of-life discussions, ethical decision-making, and psychosocial care, along with opportunities in research, teaching, and quality improvement, preparing fellows for leadership roles in clinical practice and academic palliative medicine.
