Fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry

The Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Program at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, Brooklyn is a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship program designed to provide advanced training in the comprehensive psychiatric care of older adults suffering from psychiatric and neuropsychiatric disorders. The program focuses on preparing physicians for clinical and academic careers in geriatric psychiatry through an interdisciplinary and culturally competent approach. Fellows receive extensive clinical training in acute geriatric psychiatry inpatient care, intermediate and long-term care facilities, outpatient geriatric psychiatry clinics, consultation-liaison psychiatry, dementia clinics, geriatric medicine, neurology, palliative care, and community outreach services. The curriculum emphasizes geriatric assessment, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, cognitive disorders, ethical decision-making, research, teaching skills, and management of complex psychiatric conditions in diverse elderly populations. The fellowship prepares graduates for subspecialty board certification and independent practice in geriatric psychiatry across academic, hospital, and community healthcare settings.
