Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine

The Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at UAB Heersink School of Medicine provides comprehensive training in the evaluation and management of older adults with complex medical, functional, cognitive, and psychosocial needs. Fellows gain clinical experience across inpatient and outpatient geriatric settings, including hospital services, geriatric clinics, Veterans Affairs facilities, long-term care, rehabilitation, and home-based care. Training covers comprehensive geriatric assessment, dementia, falls and mobility, polypharmacy, chronic disease management, functional impairment, post-acute care, and palliative care. The fellowship also provides opportunities for multidisciplinary teamwork, research, quality improvement, teaching, and scholarly activities, preparing fellows for clinical practice and leadership in geriatric medicine.

1. Apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
2. Submit a current Curriculum Vitae (CV), updated within the previous three months.
3. Submit medical school transcripts and diploma if requested.
4. Submit the Medical School Dean’s Letter.
5. Submit three Letters of Recommendation, including letters from former program directors.
6. Submit a certificate or verification of previous residency training.
7. Provide required United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) scores.
8. Provide evidence of eligibility for the Alabama medical license, Controlled Substance Certificate, and Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration.
9. International Medical Graduates must submit a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate.
10. Applications are reviewed beginning in July, interviews are conducted from September through October, and the fellowship begins July 1.
