The General Surgical Pathology Fellowship at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is a one-year advanced fellowship offered through the Department of Pathology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The program is designed to provide intensive diagnostic training in general surgical pathology with exposure to a wide spectrum of routine and highly complex cases referred to a major academic tertiary care center. Fellows evaluate specimens from multiple organ systems, including gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, breast, gynecologic, genitourinary, endocrine, pulmonary, head and neck, dermatologic, and soft tissue pathology. Training includes supervised sign-out with expert subspecialty pathologists, intraoperative frozen section consultation, gross specimen examination, immunohistochemistry, molecular pathology, and clinicopathologic correlation. Fellows actively participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards, pathology conferences, resident education, and quality improvement initiatives while gaining experience with digital pathology and advanced diagnostic techniques. The fellowship also emphasizes scholarly activity through clinical research, publications, and presentations at national pathology meetings. Upon completion, graduates are well prepared for careers in academic pathology, tertiary referral centers, and high-volume private practice.
