The Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology Fellowship at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is a one-year advanced fellowship offered through the Department of Pathology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The program provides comprehensive subspecialty training in the interpretation of gastrointestinal, hepatic, pancreatic, and biliary pathology specimens, preparing fellows for careers in academic pathology and specialized clinical practice. Fellows evaluate a high volume of complex biopsy and surgical resection specimens involving inflammatory, infectious, autoimmune, premalignant, and malignant diseases of the digestive system. The curriculum includes extensive exposure to gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary neoplasms, inflammatory bowel disease, Barrett's esophagus, pancreatic disorders, liver transplantation pathology, and chronic liver diseases. Fellows work closely with expert gastrointestinal pathologists and participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards, clinicopathologic conferences, endoscopy-pathology correlation meetings, and resident teaching. The fellowship also emphasizes molecular diagnostics, digital pathology, translational research, and scholarly activities, with opportunities to publish in peer-reviewed journals and present research at national and international pathology conferences. Graduates are well prepared for leadership roles in academic medical centers, tertiary referral hospitals, and specialized gastrointestinal pathology practices.
