About Course

The Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is one of the leading advanced ultrasound training programs in the United States. Established in 2012, the fellowship was developed to prepare emergency physicians for leadership roles in emergency ultrasound education, research, administration, and clinical practice.
The program is housed within the Ronald O. Perelman Department of Emergency Medicine and offers extensive exposure to cutting-edge ultrasound technology and high-volume emergency departments. Fellows train under nationally recognized emergency ultrasound faculty and gain experience across multiple academic and community clinical settings.
Clinical training focuses on the integration of point-of-care ultrasound into emergency decision-making. Fellows perform and interpret a broad range of ultrasound examinations while simultaneously maintaining emergency medicine clinical proficiency through weekly emergency department shifts.
A major strength of the fellowship is its educational curriculum. Fellows participate in weekly ultrasound conferences, hands-on workshops, simulation training, image review sessions, journal clubs, and quality assurance meetings. As the year progresses, fellows assume increasing teaching responsibilities for residents, medical students, and faculty physicians.
The fellowship also provides access to the New York Simulation Center for the Health Sciences, a state-of-the-art simulation facility that supports advanced procedural and ultrasound-based education. Fellows gain extensive experience with trauma ultrasound, cardiac imaging, procedural guidance, and advanced echocardiography.
Research is a core component of training. Fellows work closely with faculty mentors to design studies, obtain IRB approval, collect and analyze data, present findings at national conferences, and publish scholarly work in peer-reviewed journals.
Administrative and leadership development are also emphasized. Fellows participate in departmental operations, equipment oversight, ultrasound credentialing activities, quality assurance programs, and policy development initiatives.
Graduates are highly prepared for careers as ultrasound directors, academic emergency physicians, fellowship faculty, ultrasound educators, researchers, and healthcare leaders in emergency medicine. They are also eligible to pursue the American Board of Emergency Medicine Focused Practice Designation in Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography.
