The Fellowship in Blood Banking / Transfusion Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is an ACGME-accredited, interdisciplinary program offered through the Department of Pathology. The fellowship provides comprehensive training across Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, and the Versiti Illinois Immunohematology Reference Laboratory. Fellows gain extensive experience in transfusion medicine consultations, complex immunohematology investigations, therapeutic apheresis, donor center medical affairs, patient blood management, and cellular therapy. The curriculum includes dedicated rotations in pediatric transfusion medicine, stem cell processing, HLA testing, and research. Northwestern Memorial Hospital supports a Level I Trauma Center, approximately 12,000 annual deliveries, and a comprehensive range of medical and surgical specialties, while the affiliated institutions collectively perform more than 1,000 stem cell and solid organ transplants annually. Fellows also participate in multidisciplinary conferences, laboratory management activities, and scholarly research with protected research time to complete publication-quality projects for presentation at regional and national scientific meetings. The program prepares graduates for leadership positions in academic transfusion medicine, hospital transfusion services, blood centers, and cellular therapy programs.
