Overview
The Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship at the University of Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine is an ACGME-accredited fellowship that provides advanced clinical training in the assessment and treatment of substance use disorders and co-occurring psychiatric conditions. The program is part of the Division of Substance Dependence and offers training with experienced faculty in addiction psychiatry. Fellows develop competence in behavioral and psychopharmacological approaches to addiction treatment and gain clinical experience across inpatient, outpatient, residential, detoxification, methadone treatment, adolescent, and VA settings. The fellowship also allows fellows to tailor their training toward their individual career interests and goals.

Fellows receive compensation according to the University of Colorado GME salary schedule, with fellowship positions funded at the applicable PGY level.

Eligibility
- Must hold an MD, DO, or equivalent international medical degree
- Must have completed an appropriate Psychiatry Residency Program, including an ACGME-accredited residency
- Must have successfully completed USMLE Step 3 or COMLEX Part 3 before applying
- All USMLE/COMLEX steps must be passed in no more than two attempts
- International medical graduates must have a valid ECFMG certificate before appointment, unless they meet the alternative Colorado licensure requirements
- Must be eligible for an active, unrestricted Colorado physician license
- Must be eligible for a DEA license
- Must successfully complete the required criminal background investigation
- Must meet the University's requirements for legal authorization to train in the U.S., such as being a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee, asylee, or otherwise appropriately authorized to train

Admission Process:
- Submit the application through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service)
- For the 2026–2027 recruitment season, applications are accepted through ERAS beginning July 1 and during the July–November application period
- Do not send application documents directly to the program coordinator during the initial application period
- The Resident Selection Committee reviews eligible applications based on academic credentials, preparedness, experience, communication skills, interpersonal skills, motivation, integrity, and work ethic
- Selected applicants are invited for a virtual interview
- Interviews are conducted with program faculty and current/recent residents, generally from August through October
- The program initially fills available positions through the NRMP Medicine and Pediatric Specialties Fellowship Match under Addiction Specialties, with the match occurring toward the end of November
