Overview
The Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is a comprehensive ACGME-accredited subspecialty training program dedicated to preparing psychiatrists for leadership roles in addiction treatment and research. The fellowship emphasises evidence-based management of substance use disorders and co-occurring psychiatric conditions through an integrated biopsychosocial treatment model. Fellows rotate through a variety of addiction treatment settings and gain exposure to inpatient, outpatient, consultation, and community-based addiction services. Training focuses on understanding addiction as a chronic brain disease and incorporates both pharmacologic and psychosocial interventions. The program places significant emphasis on the assessment and treatment of patients with dual diagnoses, where psychiatric illness and substance use disorders coexist. Fellows work closely with board-certified addiction psychiatrists and multidisciplinary treatment teams while developing advanced clinical decision-making skills. Opportunities are available for participation in addiction-related research projects and scholarly activities within Northwestern's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences. Upon completion, fellows are eligible to sit for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) subspecialty certification examination in Addiction Psychiatry. Graduates frequently pursue careers in academic medicine, hospital systems, community mental health programs, private practice, public health organisations, and addiction treatment leadership positions.
