Overview

The Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is a prestigious ACGME-accredited one-year training program designed to prepare psychiatrists for leadership roles in addiction treatment, education, research, and healthcare administration. The fellowship offers comprehensive clinical exposure to patients with substance use disorders and co-occurring psychiatric and medical illnesses through rotations at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System. Fellows gain extensive experience managing alcohol, opioid, sedative-hypnotic, stimulant, cannabis, and polysubstance use disorders across inpatient, outpatient, consultation-liaison, withdrawal management, and opioid treatment settings. Training includes participation in the Dual Diagnosis Training Unit, Chemical Dependency Outpatient Program, Opioid Treatment Program, Consult for Addiction Treatment and Care in Hospitals (CATCH), and Virtual Buprenorphine Clinic. The fellowship emphasizes evidence-based psychopharmacology, motivational interviewing, relapse prevention strategies, psychotherapy, harm reduction approaches, and integrated care for dual-diagnosis patients. Fellows participate in weekly seminars, journal clubs, supervision sessions, and multidisciplinary educational conferences covering neuroscience, genetics, epidemiology, pharmacology, and behavioral aspects of addiction. Research and scholarly activity are strongly encouraged, and each fellow completes a scholarly project under faculty mentorship. Graduates are well prepared for careers in academic psychiatry, addiction treatment centers, consultation services, hospital systems, public health programs, and private practice.
