Fellowship Hospice & Palliative Medicine

The Hospice & Palliative Medicine Fellowship at UNC School of Medicine is an advanced one-year clinical fellowship program designed to train physicians in providing comprehensive care for patients with serious, complex, and life-limiting illnesses. The fellowship focuses on improving patient quality of life through advanced symptom management, pain and distress control, communication with patients and families, goals-of-care discussions, advance care planning, and end-of-life care. Fellows receive multidisciplinary training through inpatient palliative care services, outpatient clinics, hospice settings, and collaboration with healthcare professionals from various specialties. The program emphasizes compassionate patient-centered care, ethical decision-making, psychosocial support, education, quality improvement, and research, preparing graduates to become skilled hospice and palliative medicine specialists in academic, hospital, and community healthcare settings.

1. Submit the fellowship application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)
2. Register and participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Hospice & Palliative Medicine Match
3. Submit required application documents, including:

• ERAS application form
• Curriculum Vitae (CV)
• Personal Statement
• Medical school transcript
• USMLE / COMLEX score reports
• Letters of Recommendation
• Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE), if applicable

1. Applications are reviewed by the Hospice & Palliative Medicine Fellowship Selection Committee
2. Selected candidates are invited for a fellowship interview
3. Candidates are evaluated based on:

• Clinical training background
• Interest and experience in palliative care
• Communication and teamwork skills
• Academic achievements and career goals

1. Final selection is completed through the NRMP Match process
2. Selected fellows complete UNC GME appointment requirements and begin fellowship training
