Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Program

The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) Residency Program at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is a three-year ACGME-accredited residency training program designed to train physicians as skilled physiatrists specializing in the evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients with physical disabilities, neuromusculoskeletal conditions, and functional impairments. The program begins at the PGY-2 level after completion of a required preliminary or transitional year. Residents receive comprehensive clinical training through inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient clinics, and consultation services at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, Kings County Hospital Center, Staten Island University Hospital North Campus, VA medical centers, and affiliated hospitals. The curriculum includes musculoskeletal medicine, spinal cord injury, stroke rehabilitation, traumatic brain injury, pain management, sports medicine, electrodiagnostic medicine (EMG), prosthetics and orthotics, and rehabilitation-focused patient care. The program emphasizes hands-on clinical training, multidisciplinary teamwork with therapists and rehabilitation specialists, research opportunities, academic activities, and board preparation to prepare graduates for careers in PM&R practice and subspecialty fellowships

1. Apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) for PGY-2 advanced residency positions
2. Submit the complete ERAS application with all required documents
3. The program reviews applications and selects qualified candidates for interviews
4. Participate in the interview process (interviews are conducted virtually)
5. Final selection is completed through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)
6. Applicants must separately apply for a PGY-1 preliminary or transitional year position, as SUNY Downstate PM&R does not provide its own PGY-1 year
