Postdoctoral Fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry

• MD, DO, or equivalent international medical degree.

The Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is a one-year ACGME-accredited program offered through the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. The fellowship provides comprehensive training in the psychiatric evaluation and treatment of individuals involved with the legal system while emphasizing the ethical and scientific principles that guide forensic psychiatric practice. Fellows receive extensive experience conducting evaluations related to competency to stand trial, criminal responsibility, violence risk assessment, civil commitment, guardianship, disability, malpractice, and child custody. Clinical training occurs across a diverse range of settings, including Northwestern Memorial Hospital, court systems, correctional facilities, and forensic psychiatric programs throughout the Chicago area. The curriculum combines supervised forensic casework with formal instruction in criminal and civil law, psychiatric ethics, courtroom testimony, report writing, and consultation for attorneys and judicial agencies. Fellows also participate in multidisciplinary case conferences, academic seminars, research activities, and teaching opportunities for residents and medical students. Graduates are well prepared for careers in academic psychiatry, forensic consultation, correctional mental health, private forensic practice, and expert witness services.
