• Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A.) or equivalent from an accredited institution.
• Candidates should have a strong academic background in biological sciences, chemistry, biochemistry, physics, mathematics, environmental health sciences, or related disciplines.
• Applicants should demonstrate strong preparation in basic sciences and biomedical research concepts.
• Previous research experience in toxicology, molecular biology, environmental health, pharmacology, biomedical sciences, or related areas is highly preferred.
• Applicants must have a strong academic record and demonstrate research potential through their application materials.
• International applicants must satisfy UNC Graduate School English language proficiency requirements, if applicable.
• Candidates should have an interest in research areas related to toxicant mechanisms, environmental exposures, disease pathways, and translational toxicology.

The PhD in Toxicology & Environmental Medicine (officially offered as PhD in Toxicology through the Curriculum in Toxicology and Environmental Medicine) at UNC School of Medicine, Chapel Hill is an interdisciplinary doctoral research program focused on understanding how chemical and environmental exposures affect human health and contribute to disease development. The program provides advanced training in toxicological mechanisms, environmental health risks, molecular and cellular responses to toxicants, disease pathogenesis, and translational approaches for prevention and treatment. Students receive research training through interdisciplinary coursework, seminars, laboratory investigations, and dissertation research, with opportunities in areas such as molecular carcinogenesis, mechanistic toxicology, neurotoxicology, cardiopulmonary toxicology, hepatic toxicology, developmental toxicology, immunotoxicology, computational toxicology, drug metabolism, and environmental toxicology.
