Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program

1. Medical degree from a recognized medical school.
2. Submit United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) scores.
3. Submit the Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE), also known as the Dean’s Letter.
4. Submit three letters of recommendation.
5. Applicants are evaluated based on preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, motivation, and integrity.
6. Applicants must meet the requirements for appointment to the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center Graduate Medical Education program

The Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Training Program at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is a five-year program providing comprehensive training across major orthopaedic subspecialties. Residents gain experience in trauma, hand surgery, adult reconstruction, spine, sports medicine, foot and ankle, orthopaedic oncology, and pediatric orthopaedics. Training combines high surgical volume and operative experience with outpatient clinics, clinical supervision, anatomy conferences, lectures, simulation-based motor skills training, journal clubs, and research. Residents progressively assume greater responsibility in patient care, clinical decision-making, and surgical procedures throughout the program.

1. Submit the residency application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
2. Submit United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) scores.
3. Submit the Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE) / Dean’s Letter.
4. Submit three letters of recommendation.
5. Submit the application by November 1 as encouraged by the program.
6. The program reviews applicants based on academic and personal qualifications.
7. Selected applicants are invited for interviews, typically held during the first weekend of January.
8. Postgraduate Year 1 (PGY-1) residents are selected through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
