The Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship at the University of Minnesota Medical School provides specialized training in applying psychiatric knowledge to legal matters, mental health law, forensic evaluations, and the legal regulation of psychiatric practice. Fellows gain supervised experience in criminal and civil forensic evaluations, competency to stand trial, criminal responsibility, risk assessment, involuntary treatment, court reporting, and expert testimony. The curriculum includes weekly clinical case conferences, forensic psychiatry lectures, landmark mental health law cases, legal-digest seminars, research and scholarship, and opportunities to work with the University of Minnesota Law School. Fellows also train at forensic facilities and the Forensic Psychiatry Court Clinic, where they conduct evaluations, prepare reports, and provide court testimony under supervision.
