Overview
The Regional Anaesthesia Fellowship at SCGH is a highly structured, advanced training program designed to produce “regional anaesthesia champions.” SCGH’s anaesthesia department is a national leader in regional techniques, using advanced ultrasound-guided nerve-block methods with a high volume of cases (about 1,500 peripheral nerve blocks annually). Over six months, fellows perform a high number of nerve blocks (elective orthopaedic, trauma, plus central neuraxial) under consultant supervision, which ensures both volume and quality of learning. They also participate in the acute pain service (APS), learning post-op pain management and infusion techniques. A non-clinical component includes audit, research, and teaching, with emphasis on learning how to teach regional anaesthesia, set up a regional service, and follow up patients for complications. Fellows also contribute to registrar education via a “Mother-Duck Block Ready” program, regional anaesthesia journal clubs, and regional meetings. The fellowship helps build both procedural skill and academic / service capacity, preparing fellows to lead regional anaesthesia services in the future.
