Fellowship in Vitreo Retinal Surgery (FVRS)

The Vitreoretinal Disease and Surgery Fellowship at UAB Heersink School of Medicine is a two-year advanced clinical and surgical fellowship focused on the diagnosis and management of vitreoretinal diseases. Fellows receive extensive training in retinal imaging, diagnostic techniques, medical retina, and vitreoretinal surgery, including procedures such as scleral buckling and vitrectomy. The program provides progressive surgical responsibility and clinical experience across multiple UAB-affiliated hospitals and clinics. Fellows also participate in teaching and supervision of ophthalmology residents, preparing them for advanced practice in vitreoretinal disease and surgery.

1. Prepare the required fellowship application materials.
2. Submit the application through the SF Match (San Francisco Matching Program) Central Application Service (CAS).
3. Submit the application by September 1 of the year preceding the July 1 start date.
4. The fellowship program reviews applications and selects candidates.
5. The selected fellow receives a Clinical Instructor faculty appointment in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.
6. The selected fellow begins the two-year Vitreoretinal Disease and Surgery Fellowship.
