Fellowship in Transplant Hepatology

The Transplant Hepatology Fellowship at UAB Heersink School of Medicine is a one-year advanced training program focused on the comprehensive care of patients with advanced liver disease and those undergoing liver transplantation. Fellows gain extensive experience in inpatient hepatology, transplant evaluation, pre- and post-transplant management, hepatology consultations, and outpatient liver disease clinics. Training covers cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, autoimmune liver diseases, liver tumors, portal hypertension, and post-transplant complications. Fellows work closely with transplant surgeons, pathologists, interventional radiologists, oncologists, and infectious disease specialists. The program also includes multidisciplinary transplant conferences, liver pathology and radiology conferences, research, and quality-improvement activities.

1. Apply through the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) application process.
2. Submit the AASLD application and required supporting documents.
3. Provide post-undergraduate education details.
4. Submit United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) scores, if applicable.
5. Submit the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Certificate and visa documentation, if applicable.
6. Provide documentation confirming completion of residency and fellowship training.
7. Submit a personal statement.
8. Submit a current Curriculum Vitae (CV) updated within the previous three months.
9. Submit three Letters of Recommendation, including a letter from the Gastroenterology fellowship program director.
10. Participate in the AASLD Match process.
11. Selected applicants complete the interview process and, if matched, begin the fellowship on July 1.
