The Adult Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is a comprehensive ACGME-accredited program designed to prepare surgeons for leadership roles in critical care medicine. Based primarily at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the fellowship provides intensive training in the management of critically ill surgical patients across a wide spectrum of specialities. Fellows rotate through the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), Cardiothoracic/Transplant ICU (CTICU), Neurosciences ICU (NSICU), Medical ICU (MICU), Coronary Care Unit (CCU), and Acute Care Surgery services. The program emphasises evidence-based critical care, multidisciplinary collaboration, quality improvement, patient safety, and advanced clinical decision-making. Fellows gain expertise in mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring, renal replacement therapy, sepsis management, extracorporeal support systems, and complex perioperative care. Individualised learning plans are developed to align training with each fellow's career goals. The fellowship also includes research opportunities, simulation-based education, journal clubs, multidisciplinary conferences, and leadership development activities. Graduates are prepared for board certification in Surgical Critical Care and careers in academic medicine, trauma centres, surgical ICUs, transplant centres, and healthcare leadership.
