Fellowship in Spine Surgery

The Spine Fellowship at UAB Heersink School of Medicine is a comprehensive advanced training program in adult and pediatric orthopaedic spine care, covering both non-operative and operative management of spinal disorders. Fellows gain extensive clinical and surgical experience involving the lumbar, cervical, and thoracic spine, with exposure to degenerative conditions, trauma, deformity, tumors, and pediatric disorders. The program provides progressive surgical responsibility, with fellows typically completing more than 350 surgical cases and spending approximately four days per week in the operating room and one day in clinic. Fellows also participate in resident teaching, research projects, and specialized educational activities through AO Spine.

1. Complete the required fellowship application materials.
2. Fulfill the application distribution requirements by September 1.
3. Submit the application through the Spine Surgery Fellowship Match.
4. The program reviews applications from qualified applicants who have completed approved Orthopaedic Surgery residencies.
5. Candidates are selected through the fellowship matching process.
6. The selected fellow begins the one-year Spine Fellowship at UAB
