Fellowship in Pediatric Rheumatology

The Pediatric Rheumatology Fellowship Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine provides three years of specialized training in the diagnosis and management of rheumatic, autoimmune, and inflammatory diseases in children and adolescents. Fellows gain extensive clinical experience through outpatient clinics and inpatient consultations, with exposure to conditions such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, myositis, scleroderma, vasculitis, and other pediatric rheumatic disorders. The program also provides training in biologic and other advanced therapies, multidisciplinary patient care, teaching, and research, with protected time during the later fellowship years for clinical, translational, or basic science research and scholarly activities.

1. Apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Pediatric Rheumatology is listed by UAB among the fellowship programs using ERAS.
2. Submit the ERAS Common Application Form.
3. Provide three letters of recommendation, including one from the Department Chair or Residency Director.
4. Submit United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Steps 1, 2 and 3 scores, or Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) Levels 1, 2 and 3 scores, as applicable.
5. Submit a personal statement.
6. Submit an updated curriculum vitae.
7. Submit the medical school transcript.
8. Sign the required National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Applicant Agreement.
9. Selected applicants are invited for the fellowship interview and selection process.
10. Final appointments are made through the applicable NRMP Pediatric Subspecialty Match.
