Fellowship in Obstetric Anesthesia

The Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship at UAB Heersink School of Medicine is a one-year advanced fellowship focused on the anesthetic management of pregnant and postpartum patients, including routine, high-risk, and emergency obstetric cases. Fellows receive extensive clinical training in labor analgesia, cesarean delivery, maternal-fetal medicine, obstetric emergencies, and perioperative management of complex maternal conditions. Training takes place primarily at the UAB Women and Infants Center, with multidisciplinary collaboration involving obstetricians, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, neonatologists, and critical care teams. The fellowship also emphasizes teaching, quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical research.

2. The application requires three letters of recommendation, including one letter from the applicant’s residency program director.
3. The application is reviewed based on the applicant’s written application, academic record, scholarly activities, and other qualifications.
4. Selected candidates are invited for an interview with the fellowship director and obstetric anesthesiology faculty.
5. Final selection is conducted through the fellowship matching process.
