Fellowship in Interventional Pulmonology

1. Candidates must have completed the required prior training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine for entry into the Interventional Pulmonology Fellowship.
2. Candidates must be eligible to train at the Birmingham Veterans Affairs Health Care System.
3. Applicants must provide copies of all United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) score reports.
4. Applicants must submit a summarized, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-compliant procedure log showing the types and numbers of procedures performed.
5. Required vaccinations must be completed according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations for healthcare workers, including routine childhood vaccinations, Hepatitis B, COVID-19, and influenza, unless an approved exemption applies.
6. There is no minimum USMLE score requirement; scores are considered as part of the overall application review.
7. Candidates requiring visa sponsorship may apply for J-1 visa sponsorship.

The Interventional Pulmonology Fellowship at UAB Heersink School of Medicine is a 12-month advanced training program focused on complex airway and pleural diseases and comprehensive procedural skills. Fellows receive hands-on training in bronchoscopy, airway procedures, pleural disease management, and interventional pulmonary consultations through the bronchoscopy suite, outpatient clinic, and inpatient services. The program provides multidisciplinary exposure through collaboration with thoracic surgery, otolaryngology, chest radiology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, and radiology. Fellows also participate in interventional pulmonology conferences, thoracic oncology tumor boards, complex airway disease conferences, and research or quality improvement projects.

1. Apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) or the Interventional Pulmonology Fellowship Application System (IPFAS) through the Association of Interventional Pulmonology Program Directors.
2. Submit a current Curriculum Vitae (CV).
3. Submit a personal statement.
4. Provide three Letters of Recommendation, including one from the applicant's Program Director.
5. Submit copies of all USMLE score reports.
6. Submit a summarized HIPAA-compliant procedure log listing the type and number of procedures performed.
7. Applications open on July 1, with the application deadline on August 31.
8. Applicants selected for further consideration are invited for an interview, generally conducted from September through early October.
9. All fellowship appointments are arranged through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), and all Interventional Pulmonology Fellowship candidates must participate in the match.
10. The fellowship academic year runs from July 1 through June 30.
