Overview

  • The Infectious Diseases Fellowship affiliated with New York Medical College is an ACGME-accredited postgraduate subspecialty training program designed to prepare physicians for advanced careers in infectious diseases, academic medicine, clinical research, transplant infectious disease management, and hospital epidemiology. The fellowship is primarily based at Westchester Medical Center, the major academic affiliate and university hospital of NYMC, along with additional training exposure at NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan and St. Michael’s Medical Center.
  • The program offers extensive clinical exposure to a broad range of infectious diseases including HIV/AIDS, multidrug-resistant infections, transplant-related infections, fungal diseases, tropical infections, hospital-acquired infections, sexually transmitted infections, tick-borne illnesses, and infections in critically ill and immunocompromised patients. Fellows actively participate in inpatient consultation services, outpatient infectious disease clinics, antimicrobial stewardship programs, infection prevention initiatives, and multidisciplinary patient management.
  • The curriculum integrates bedside teaching, microbiology laboratory exposure, journal clubs, infectious disease conferences, grand rounds, board review sessions, and evidence-based clinical education. Fellows receive dedicated training in infection control practices, antibiotic stewardship strategies, epidemiology, diagnostic microbiology, and management of emerging infectious threats. The fellowship also includes research exposure through mentored scholarly projects and protected academic time during training.
  • NYMC’s infectious disease division is internationally recognized for research in Lyme disease, babesiosis, tick-borne illnesses, HIV/AIDS, antimicrobial resistance, and emerging infectious diseases. Fellows benefit from collaboration with experts in microbiology, pathology, immunology, transplant medicine, critical care, oncology, and public health. Research support is available through collaborations with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and New York State health agencies.
  • The training environment exposes fellows to highly complex patient populations including transplant recipients, oncology patients, trauma patients, ICU patients, burn patients, and underserved urban communities. Faculty mentorship strongly emphasizes academic development, clinical excellence, research productivity, teaching skills, and leadership growth within infectious diseases practice.
  • Graduates are prepared for American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) certification in Infectious Diseases and future careers in academic medicine, transplant infectious disease programs, HIV specialty care, infection prevention leadership, antimicrobial stewardship, public health, hospital epidemiology, and clinical research institutions.
