Fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine

1. Applicants must pass United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Steps 1, 2, 3, and Clinical Skills (CS) on the first attempt.
2. Applicants taking the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination of the United States (COMLEX-USA) must pass Levels 1, 2, and 3 on the first attempt.
3. If a visa is required, the program sponsors J-1 visas only.
4. International Medical Graduates must have at least 3 months of hands-on clinical experience in the United States.
5. International Medical Graduates must have graduated from medical school within the last 5 years.
6. Applicants requiring an H-1B visa are not eligible for sponsorship.

The Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) is a one-year program focused on providing comprehensive care to adults and children with serious and life-limiting illnesses. Fellows receive training in inpatient and outpatient care, hospice and home-based services, pain and symptom management, communication and shared decision-making, advance care planning, and end-of-life care. The program provides experience across multiple clinical settings, including Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, adult hospitals, hospice facilities, Veterans Affairs, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Fellows also participate in teaching, research, quality improvement, ethics, and interdisciplinary team-based care.

1. Submit the application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
2. Applications are reviewed based on qualifications, including United States Medical Licensing Examination scores, medical school performance, and letters of recommendation.
3. Qualified applicants are invited for an interview.
4. Interviews are conducted from August through October and are held virtually through Zoom.
5. Final selection is made by a committee consisting of the Program Director, Associate Program Directors, and core faculty.
