Fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology

The Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship at UAB Heersink School of Medicine is a comprehensive three-year program providing broad clinical, procedural, and research training in gastrointestinal and liver diseases. Fellows receive hands-on experience across UAB Hospital, Birmingham Veterans Affairs Health Care System, UAB Highlands, The Kirklin Clinic, Cooper Green Mercy Hospital, and Children's Hospital of Alabama. Training covers a wide range of conditions, including pancreatitis, Crohn's disease, inflammatory bowel disease, hepatic encephalopathy, and chronic liver disease, through inpatient, outpatient, hepatology, endoscopy, and subspecialty rotations. The program includes two years of clinical training and a third year of clinical or research training, with elective rotations tailored to individual career interests. Fellows also participate in Gastroenterology Grand Rounds, Liver Pathology conferences, subspecialty conferences, teaching activities, continuity clinics, and dedicated research opportunities.

1. Apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), program number 1007144F0.
2. Submit a current Curriculum Vitae (CV) updated within the previous three months.
3. Submit medical school transcripts and diploma if requested.
4. Submit the Medical School Dean's Letter.
5. Submit three Letters of Recommendation, including letters from former program directors.
6. Submit a certificate or verification of previous residency training.
7. Provide documentation demonstrating eligibility for an Alabama Medical License and Alabama Controlled Substance Certificate.
8. Provide eligibility for Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration.
9. International Medical Graduates must submit a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Certificate.
10. No additional documents outside the ERAS submission are accepted.
11. Applications are reviewed beginning in July, with applicants required to be available by August 1.
12. Interview invitations are released during the last week of August, with interviews conducted from September through October.
13. Applicants participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Match, with the fellowship beginning on July 1.
14. The program can sponsor J-1 visas. H-1B sponsorship is generally not available unless the fellow is already within the United States.
