Fellowship in Echocardiography
Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH), Nedlands, Perth
Perth, Western Australia, Australia
Course TypeFellowship
Course Specialty
Clinical Echocardiography
Overview
SCGH’s Anaesthesia Department runs a structured Echo School for fellows and consultants, held weekly (Wednesday afternoons). The curriculum spans from the basics (echo physics, TTE) to advanced pathology (valve disease, congenital heart disease, pericardium, diastology) and includes critical care echocardiography and lung ultrasound. Fellows learn both practical scanning (obtaining images) and theoretical interpretation/reporting skills. They also get supervised time in cardiothoracic and cardiology theatre lists, and in pre-admission / perioperative clinics to identify patients needing echocardiography. During non-echo clinical time, fellows are exposed to cardiology and anaesthesia-cardiac theatre sessions. Echo school is protected time, ensuring learning without competing clinical duties. By the end of the fellowship, fellows are expected to be competent in full TTE studies, interpretation, and reporting. They are encouraged (or expected) to complete a formal ultrasound qualification, such as the University of Melbourne Graduate Certificate in Clinical Ultrasound.
