The Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship that prepares anesthesiologists for careers as highly skilled intensivists in both academic and private practice settings. Based primarily at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, one of the nation's leading tertiary and quaternary care centres, the program provides comprehensive exposure to high-acuity critical care across multiple intensive care units. Fellows rotate through the Neurosciences/Spine ICU, Cardiothoracic and Transplant ICU, Medical ICU, Coronary Care Unit, Pediatric ICU, and other specialised services, managing patients with complex medical, surgical, neurologic, trauma, vascular, thoracic, and transplant conditions. The curriculum emphasizes advanced airway management, bronchoscopy, transesophageal echocardiography, ECMO, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, and mechanical ventilation through extensive hands-on clinical experience and simulation-based education. Fellows also supervise residents and medical students, participate in multidisciplinary critical care teams, and receive individualised mentorship in clinical and translational research. Regular didactic sessions, journal clubs, morbidity and mortality conferences, and quality improvement activities complement the clinical training. Upon successful completion, graduates are eligible to sit for the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) Critical Care Medicine Certification Examination and are well prepared for leadership roles in critical care medicine.
