Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine (FICM)

1. Completion of an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine residency
2. Board eligibility or certification in the primary training specialty
3. Submission of a complete ERAS application (with personal statement, CV, letters of recommendation, and exam scores)
4. Participation in the NRMP match process using the designated program code
5. Demonstrated interest in critical care clinical practice or research

The Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center is a two-year, ACGME-accredited postgraduate training program designed to prepare physicians to practice as expert intensivists in any adult ICU setting. Fellows rotate through multiple critical care environments — including the Medical ICU (MICU), Cardiac ICU (CICU), Surgical ICU (SICU), Neonatal ICU (NeICU), Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU), and community ICU rotations — gaining experience with a broad spectrum of critically ill patients. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, team-based leadership, evidence-based decision making, airway and ventilator management, point-of-care ultrasound and advanced echocardiography training, and ICU procedures such as bronchoscopy and difficult airway management. Fellows also participate in dedicated academic half-days, simulation curricula, research and quality improvement projects, and electives tailored to individual interests (e.g., advanced echo/TEE, palliative care, transplant ICU, trauma critical care). Shifts are capped at 12 hours with structured night coverage supported by attending intensivists. The overall goal is to train highly skilled, adaptable intensivists capable of leading critical care teams and providing state-of-the-art care for complex critically ill patients.
