Fellowship in Clinical Informatics

• Must hold an MD or DO degree (or equivalent international medical degree)
• Must have completed an ACGME-accredited (or equivalent) residency program
• Must be board-certified or board-eligible in a primary specialty
• Must be eligible for medical licensure in North Carolina
• Demonstrated interest in clinical informatics, healthcare IT, and data systems
• International applicants must meet visa and institutional requirements

The Clinical Informatics Fellowship at the UNC School of Medicine is a 2-year ACGME-accredited program that trains physicians to leverage data, information systems, and digital health technologies to improve patient care and healthcare delivery. The program combines structured didactic learning with hands-on operational experience and mentored projects, allowing fellows to work closely with health IT teams on areas such as electronic health records optimization, clinical decision support, data analytics, workflow improvement, and quality initiatives. Fellows gain real-world exposure within UNC Health while continuing limited clinical practice in their primary specialty, and the flexible, customizable curriculum supports the development of leadership skills in informatics, preparing graduates for board certification and advanced roles in healthcare systems, academia, or industry.
